Waste Management and Pollution Prevention

Objective

The section is mandated with regulatory powers to manage and protect the environment from pollution due to human activities, which can affect the quality of air, water and land. The section also implements the strategies of the “National Solid Waste Management Policy”. In undertaking this role, the section is responsible for developing strategies in collaboration with the Waste Management Cooperation, and for undertaking, on behalf of the Waste Management Cooperation, projects for sustainable waste management in the Maldives. These are carried out through community awareness and understanding of resource efficiency, waste avoidance and resource recovery and sustainable waste service provisions.

The section is responsible for:

•    Making rules, regulations, standards and guidelines on Maldives Waste Management in an environment friendly manner and ensuring compliance with them by waste service providers.
•    Researching and experimenting on environmental pollution and providing relevant technical and scientific expertise to other concerned authorities.
•    Monitoring ambient air quality including atmospheric gases, smoke and particulate matter and developing air quality management plans and providing them to those who need such information.
•    Developing and implementing policies and strategies to avoid and minimize waste.
