Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration Atoll Ecosystem Conservation Project has conducted a cleaning program in Hanifaru Island on 17th April 2012. The event is conduct in preparation of Hanifaru Marine Protected Area for the season 2012. More than 85% of the waste collected from Hanifaru Island is plastic bottles. Majority of the waste was collected from the picnic area of the Island. Total of sixty seven bags of waste was collected, and thirty two were transported to Male’. The Club Combination members volunteered in the cleaning program.
According to the Hanifaru Protection and Preservation Regulation (2012/ R-23) a special permit needs to be taken in order to enter Hanifaru Island.
