Huraa Mangrove Area
PDF Print E-mail

It is an embayment mangrove in which the mangrove vegetation encircles a ‘bay’ that is subjected to daily tidal flushing. ‘island-like’ vegetation clumps are also found within the bay. The water level of the water-body found in the middle of the mangrove is closely related to the tidal regimes and movement of water to and from the pond takes place through a narrow channel that connects mangrove to the open sea.
The pond is generally shallow with a depth of about 2 – 3 feet during high tide. The floor of the vegetated areas is covered with mud reaching an average depth of about 0.5m. The mud mostly consists of decaying humus. Other areas are covered with coral sand.

SPECIAL FEATURES:  Unique vegetation and a resting place for some protected birds. Ten species of plants are found in the Huraa mangrove, these include four species of true mangroves and five mangrove associate plants
