Land sites in K.Thulusdhoo previously used for industrial purpose found contaminated with hazardous chemicals and materials are under investigation.

Three land sites in K. Thulusdhoo previously used for industrial and commercial purpose have been found with environmental contamination. These abandoned sites survey by EPA from 2nd to 4th April 2012 include home use liquid bleach manufacturing, boat building using fiber glass/epoxy resin and a used oil disposal site.

Preliminary survey reports indicate soil and groundwater of these sites are heavily contaminated with hazardous chemicals and materials that have been left behind.Chemicals and materials found on these sites include hydrochloric acid in barrels, hydrated lime, epoxy resin fiber, light soda ash, pasting power/corrugation powder (unknown chemical composition), wood glue (unknown chemical composition), As per the site condition, these sites could cause health risks to community on the island and further environmental pollution. In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, EPA is carrying out further assessments and investigationon these sites for site cleanup operation and legal actions against to those who committed these environmental crimes.
